I was so looking forward to a Tigers-Yankees series where the Tigers were coming in with the best record in baseball for once, but of course Detroit then had to get creamed. Sigh. I have no illusions of the Tigers making the playoffs this year, but at least we should finally finish above .500 for the first time in forever. That's something, at least.
Oh, and not that I have any love for Fred Phelps and his family, but I can't agree with Dubya doing this. I realize that there is a tricky balance to maintain between free speech rights and the sanctity of a funeral, and even with me being as much of a First Amendment nut as I am, my own tendency is to believe that protests at a funeral of any stripe should not be allowed. That being said, it concerns me that the legislation just passed only makes protests at military funerals illegal. Not that I don't have respect for the men and women of this country who sacrifice their lives while in the military (even if I don't agree with the reasons why their lives were put on the line in the first place), but just limiting the scope of the new legislation to military funerals just doesn't seem right to me. Sure, now the Phelps family's actions at military funerals will be curtailed, but if we have another high-profile GLBT murder such as Matthew Shepard's then there won't be any laws stopping them from pushing their message of hate there.
